Butting in here on Maryben... it seems obvious to me
that the WEG is not a multiday.

    Maybe it should be!
The problem with this discussion is that many factors play in, and arguments applied to one are subsequently followed over to the other. Question: can you prove that more frequent holds and/or shorter loops protect horses from overriding? The answer seems to be: only if you decided to not consider any data that doesn't support that argument--ie multidays. maybe rides in the mountains. maybe rides where its cold. maybe rides less than 100 miles. But Karen Chaton just posted that she recently did a 1 day 100 with only 4 checks with no problem.
If the perceived solution to the horse deaths at the WEG is to mandate "x" number of checks per ride....well, a lot of people will be unhappy, and horses will still be overridden. Or do you think only FEI should have such a rule, but AERC is SO guilt-free of allowing overriding that it isn't necessary for us?
What are the differences between the WEG (needs to have x number of checks) and a multi-day (doesn't)? Obviously, number of days. (Jerez has successfully run as a 2-day 100 for years). But also: rider motiviation. Huge committess of officials--both Ride Management and Vets are not individuals, but are groups of people who have to work together--and anybody who's ever served on a committee knows how THAT goes. The leasing of horses. The high profile.
Not so simple as saying "experience has proven that more checks/shorter loops" will solve the problem.
