Simple. Sometimes you simply do not have the money. These days I work full time and I have some money. Up until three years ago I managed to stay home and raise my own kids while my husband supported us on one salary. Fortunately, these days I don't have to think "where can I make $65 to pay my AERC fees? We're certainly not rich now, but there was a time I did have to go find some odd job to pay it. Know how I got started writing for magazines? I couldn't afford to subscribe to Trail Blazer, and they had an offer where if they published something you wrote you got a free subscription. I did that for three years before they decided to hire me. Know why so many southeast T-shirts have been designed by me? Not because I like to, because I had to for the entry.

When the lady wrote the story about getting pulled, and walking 6 miles thinking about how much gas money she spent getting there, and the cost of shoes, and entry fees, I could see myself. I once quit half way through a ride when I had a horrible stomach virus, then got back up, went back out and finished because I couldn't afford to waste that $50 entry fee.

I still don't have credit for all my miles because I couldn't afford to join AERC my first 2 years. I hope we keep fees low enough that the "non-aluminum gooseneck" people don't have to make that choice. I'd rather pay a higher per-ride fee.
