RE: [RC] neoprene allergy? - Marlene Moss

Has anyone whose horses have exhibited the neoprene allergy with boots
tried those made by Easy Care? There is a layer of nylon/cloth on their
boots on the inside, so that the rubbery neoprene is not in direct
    contact with the horse.

I've wondered if the neoprene problems are specifically with the
material or just the lack of ability breath/wick away sweat. I've had a
couple horses with reactions to neoprene girths, but not the boots.

So I'm curious if that additional layer helps. Especially since Jon has
some Easy Care boots on order through me! And if they don't work for
you, I'll take them back Jon!

Thanks for any further info on the neoprene reactions!
    Marlene

Neoprene allergies are not uncommon. I don't routinely use boots, but I
    do
have one horse who breaks out in a rash when ridden with a neoprene
    girth.

As to the swelling under the boots--in addition to the allergy problem,
consider that you have also trapped heat under the boots as well, which
    can
be a problem. Most horses who interfere do so only when fatigued, so
    for
openers, consider just carrying the boots with you, and not putting them
    on
until the horse begins to tire. I've had folks who've been able to
    carry
them along until 30 or 35 miles, and only use them the last few miles of
    the
ride. This cuts down on the exposure time to the neoprene, the amount
    of
time the leg is subjected to heat buildup, and the amount of time there
    is
for sweat and dirt to accumulate under the boots. As an alternative to
neoprene, consider boots make of other materials--leather, etc.
