[RC] Advice for 48 year old beginner - Steven & Trudy Hurd

As an adult beginner to both riding and endurance I would like suggestions on what key elements of horsemanship I should have my riding instructor teach. My wife and son each own a horse and after spending time watching their lessons and going along on a couple short trail rides, which I throughly enjoyed, I have decided to join them. I started lessons a few weeks ago, once a week and a trail ride on the weekend. My instructors background is in Dressage and eventing but she is willing to tailor lessons to student interests.
I am 48 years old, in reasonable shape, was in sports in HS and College(long time ago!!),do not even mind wearing a helmet(covers the bald spot!!). Are any of the rest of you riders who learned horsemanship as adults? I would welcome any encouragement or advice as I have set a goal of doing my first LD by the time I am 50yo, my "25 by 50" program.
