Re: [RC] Question to ask when buying... - Bette Lamore

Ditto about being up front. In fact, when a buyer comes to see my horses, I frequently just pull them out of pasture when they arrive. Some of you on ridecamp are probably chuckling because that is exactly what I did with you. This is contrary to what a lot of folks do; i.e. ride the he@* out of the horse and then cool him off just before a buyer comes. I'd rather they see the horse at his worst--- he can only go up from there ;-) If the horse needs to be lunged first, we do that when the buyer comes--- don't want them to have any surprises later.
The last buyer I had did NOT buy my horse (whom I had not ridden for 2 years!) Reason: Streetdancer was TOO WELL BEHAVED! He said he liked them wild! Well, he'll just have to go elsewhere 'cause wild my horses aren't (although some have been known to give out a back kick (not quite a buck) when they feel they are being treated unfairly--- like some "experienced rider" buyer yanking the heck out of their mouths. They simply aren't used to rude riders.) :-)

My standard question when looking for a horse to buy is, "What is the

    worst

thing you can say about him?" If I can deal with the answer, I buy the
    horse, if not, I pass.

Yep, and always volunteer this, when I have sold a horse. I don't ever want the buyer calling me back disappointed....so I will tend to over-talk every good and bad detail about the horse.

I sold an Arab/Morgan mare to a pony club lady. We had used her for mainly
trail and LD endurance; before that she had very good arena training. But,
somewhere along the way she had gotten her way, and would pitch fits if you
asked her to do something she didn't want to. The year and half with that
mare was spend with a lot of miles on the trail, then finding out the stuff
she didn't want to do (like separating from the group),and making her do it
    , every ride.

I hauled this mare down to Pt Reyes for the lady to try her out. My
daughter and I rode along, and took her over creeks, bridges, opened gates,
etc. We were able to find a trail and ride that made that little mare look
REALLY good! The buyer was really impressed! Then, we started to do some
things to test her with this lady riding her. My daughter took off galloping
up a hill (with warning to this lady).....We did leapfrogging stuff. Then,
almost back to the trailer, we told her to turn the mare around, make the
leave the group and do a little loop alone. I told her that whatever she
did, or tried to do, would be the worst they would ever see. BTW, this lady
was a very experienced rider. Anyway, the mare did protest, but this buyer
had no problem making her leave....and did say that the mare was much more
"peppy", being alone, but easily manageable.....
