Re: [RC] [RC] Question to ask when buying... - A. Perez

    1. Why are you selling. I'm always surprised by the ads that
say they are selling due to finances or lack of time, but then
go on to state they will consider taking another horse in
    trade. Hmm....
    2. Vet and farrier history: vaccination, worming shoeing
schedule. Ask if they'll sign a release for the vets records,
and give you the phone # of the farrier (follow up and call
the vet/farrier to confirm care hsitory and behavior for
    vetting/ shoeing.)
    3. How long have they owned the horse, name and address of
    prior owner: again, follow up.
    4. Any prof. training? Name and address of trainer, and yes,
again follow up. Get trainer's assessment of horse (if current
owner will write a letter authorizing release of this info,
may get more from trainer. Hint: write the letter so the owner
can just sign it and send it.
    5. If you could change any thing about this horse, what would
itbe: no horse is perfect: try to get owner talking.
    6. Show/competition history.
    7. "Is there anything I should know about this horse...?"
Many people feel OK about not telling you something if you
didn't ask, so a broad question like this might tickle a scruple
or two and elicit some useful info.

Of course, when I bought my last horse, did I do any of this...?
Heck no, it was love at first sight ;-)

    A.
