I had a mare that for no apparent reason started refusing to go downhill. She did the same things your gelding does. I finally got the chiropractor out and he did some adjusting in her withers and that cured her. Before she was adjusted I realized that her mane fell to the right from her poll to about half way down her neck, then it flipped over to the left for the rest of the way. After her adjustment I noticed that her mane was now completely falling only to the right. So maybe your chiro has overlooked something.
