I sincerely hope that our military efforts, whatever they may be, will go
after the terrorists as much as possible, while doing as little damage to
civilians (who in many cases are also victims) as possible. Afghanistan was
a perfect example--a society in which the regime in power, representing
perhaps 5% of the Afghan population, held their own people in oppression. I
also support any action we have to take to defend ourselves from further
acts of terrorism, but I hope I can maintain the perspective to understand
that it is the regime we are fighting, not the people "on the other side"
who have also fallen victim to it. I cannot bring myself to hate Russian
peasants, German factory workers, or Japanese farmers, just because they,
too, were victims of outrageous political systems, dictatorships, etc., that
victimized them and used them as cannon fodder, so to speak, against the
America of my parents' generation. If some terrorist next to me on an
airplane stands up with a box knife and tries to hijack the flight, I'll be
the tubby middle-aged lady throwing my carryon luggage, my shoes, or
whatever, trying to stop him, and beating him over the head with the book I
bring aboard for in-flight reading, since they won't let me carry my
pocketknife and scissors on board anymore. And I am mentally prepared to do
whatever I possibly can, should I ever find myself in that undesirable
position. But to stereotype all Arabs as anti-USA is about as accurate as
labeling all blacks as being hoodlums from the ghettos--it just ain't so.

Heidi (conservative, militaristic, and glad to accept people one-on-one for
who they really are, not what the media says they ought to be.)
