<snip>We have much to gain by being gracious in defeat. And hopefully we are classy enough to take it stride, learn form the experience, make no excuses, hold no ill will and start preparing for 2004 when we will have the opportunity to rise to the top once more.</snip>

Julie, I think these are such wise words. On my way to work this morning, I was thinking about some of the posts I've read here about foreign competitors. I planned to compose a note this morning, stating that part of being a winner is learning to lose with grace. That is far more telling (to me) about a person and their personal values then whether they actually cross the finish line first.

I am more than a newbie, having never even attended an endurance ride to date. I am a dressage rider who loves the outdoors, and think that some limited distance rides might be fun to try with my beloved homebred Thoroughbred partners. I like to think that the love of horses and equine sport unite those of us from different countries and cultures. This is the kind of thing that helps heal the world of its ills.

Congratulations to all of the riders and horses that qualified for this wonderful sporting event. You are ALL winners in my book, regardless of country affiliation. You worked hard, were afforded the opportunity to compete, and did so to the best of your ability on that day. The same is true of our gold-medal winning Eventing team, our up-and-coming Dressage champions (you go, girls, Debbie and Brentina, Sue and Flim Flam! And all the others, too! :), and our show-jumping folks. I am proud of our teams!

Amy and the Finch Meadow Gang
