[RC] Nick Warhol Ride Report- Pacific South East Bay 25 / 50 - nick warhol

Ride report- Pacific South East Bay 25/50
    9/14/02, Oakland, Ca.
Kathy Campbell and Nick Warhol, Ride Managers

Hi everyone- The East Bay 25/50 was held this weekend in Chabot and Redwood
    parks
in Oakland. The ride is a benefit for the USA Pacific South Endurance
    Squad, all the
proceeds go towards sending the team to the Pan Am games every other year.
The weather cooperated fully with a nice, cool, foggy morning that burned
    off into a
very pretty, sunny day with a cool breeze. We had a pretty good turnout
    this year,
we started 43 riders in the 50, and 31 in the 25 mile ride. All 31 starters
    finished
the limited distance ride! They did a great job with their horses all day
    long. There
were five pulls in the 50 mile ride, all from lameness; there were no
    metabolic problems
or treatments. Our head vet was Melissa Ribley; Susan Mcartney and Steve
    Gardner were Melissa?s
    very capable team.

Our first place horse in the 50 was Kesil, ridden by Ulla Howes. She had a
    great ride and
was smiling all day long! The rest of the top ten was Nancy Corbeletta 2nd,
    Sally
Billingsley 3rd, Linda Dollar 4th, Rick Gomez 5th, Daniela Mielke 6th,
    Deborah
Breashears 7th, Jinell Breashears 8th (and first Junior!), Cheryl Davidson
    9th, and rounding
out the top ten was Kim Zvik. Rick Gomez rode a smart ride to fifth place
    and took
best condition on his horse Monterey. There was an incredible romp to the
    finish by
Linda, Rick, Daniela, Deborah, and Jinell. The five of them came blasting
    down the road
to the finish, laughing and hooting it up as they raced in the last few
    hundred yards.

We don?t give out a Best Condition on the 25, we present a Horse Excellence
    Award to
the horse and rider combination our vets feel did a great job and looked
    good all day.
I borrowed a line from Mitch Benson when I announced at the awards that we
    had to
change the name of the prize to the Equine Excellence Award, since we were
    not giving
it to a horse. It was awarded to a really cute mule named E-Mule, ridden by
    Mark
Borden. Little E-Mule trucked along all day, looking like he was really
    enjoying himself.
Congratulations to Mark and Rick on their fine horses, er, equines!

We in Pac South like to give out prizes, so we held a rider card raffle at
    the awards dinner
and gave out a bunch of neat stuff to all riders, pulled or not. Our grand
    prize was a
Ryobi 14.4 volt electric drill/driver kit. We also had lots of nice
    endurance related prizes
as well, many donated by our great sponsors. Special thanks to (in
    alphabetic order)
Arbee Ice boots, The Australian Connection, Cool Down Under, SportTack, Dave
    Walker, and
Western Saddlery. Please be sure to give these great vendors your business!

We got very good feedback from a lot of our riders, I really appreciate so
many people taking the time to fill out the rider surveys after the event.
    A couple of
people commented that they would like to see some more signs and arrows at
    confusing
intersections, rather than just the three ribbons. We will add more signs
    and flour next
year. (You know the stupid cows eat the flour we use for arrows?) We had to
    leave a
couple of gates closed because of said cows, we apologize about that. One
    of the gates
was really broken, some people said it was like trying to open a hatch on a
    battleship.
Some riders encountered a couple of surly hikers, but in general our riders
    reported the
hiker and biker interaction was good.

Oh yes, it?s important to note that Michael Hartman edged out his wife
    Kristine at the
finish line for 14th place, not vice versa.

Our event was saddened by a tragedy, though. We had the worst kind of
    disaster possible.
On Friday night, around midnight, two horses escaped from their containment
    and took
off running down the trail, away from camp. They made a right turn and ran
    up a dirt
road towards Skyline Blvd. One of the horses got tangled up in the wire
    fence and
sustained injuries bad enough to require being put down. Susan Mcartney
    went out and
performed the grisly task at around 2 in the morning. The second horse was
    caught at a
stable nearby and was returned the next morning. The horses belonged to
    Frank
Rothschild of Red Shield Equestrian Center. The horse that was put down was
    named
Hal yva Guy. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Frank for the tragic loss
    of his horse.

Thanks again to everyone who came out to the ride, and especially our
    volenteers.
We at Pacific South really appreciate the support. We will see you all
    again next year,
when we will have anothergreat ride, and even more prizes! Who knows, maybe
    we will give
    away a horse trailer........
