RE: [RC] What is the ONE thing? - Snodgrass, Bonnie

I wish that I had done more conditioning miles on hard surfaces. This
obviously depends on where you live. You may ride daily on hard surfaces
because that's the terrain in your area but many of us train regularly on
softer trails. I thought I was doing enough hard surface conditioning. I had
to trailer to a WMA to find gravel roads to ride on. My first 25 mile ride
had miles of bluestone road. May as well have been concrete. I windpuffed my
horse on her very first ride and of course she still has those windpuffs to
    remind me of my mistake.

I guess I would say, "Do not compete your horse on surfaces it does not have
regular exposure to". That includes sand, mud and hard packed surfaces! In
fact, I will not do a ride if the trails are really deep mud. Not worth it.
Save your horse for another ride.

What is the ONE thing you wished you had know, or wished someone had told
    you
before you started endurance? I am contemplating trying out my first 25 in
    the
spring and would like to be enlightened. :o)
