There are two sets of medals. Individual, and team. Team competition is
a conservative game. You *have* to finish three out of four riders which
is difficult. The Individual medals go to risk takers. If you think
your horse is the best of the best, you want to ride as an individual
since team members have to be willing to adjust their pace according to
the performance of the others. For instance, if you were up front, and
one of the other team members pulled, the team may require you to slow
down to a more conservative pace.

What this translates to is that we're hoping Heather or Val brings home
the individual gold (and of course the other gets the silver)...and we
think the 4 team members will put what's best for the team above
    individual placings.

Often in these situations the horses will team up and help pace each
other. I wouldn't be surprised if our team members have been told to ride
in two assigned pairs, and Val & Heather help pace each other.
