[RC] Mane loss update - Laurie Durgin

I'd written some months ago looking for ideas about the hair , mane loss on 3 of my horses off and on for 1.5 yrs. After checking all my books, mag. articles and  having 2 different vets out. I still wasn't finding help. Had it pinned down to a connection with rain, and gnats. (IMHO) Vet thought it was fly allergy developing  and said I could get rid of flys , stable them in an AC/screened barn and put them on steriods or move. Other vet disagreed. It was reoccurring in the same spot months apart, frequnetly on one horse only once or twice on others. We ruled out mane chewing (it had fallen out in my hand) and I watch them daily, no one mane chews (trees yes, not hair).Ruled out rubbing too. Center of manes.
Well while talking to everyone everywhere and explaining my problem I tried something and haven't had anyone loss on Honey and Rascal. I bath them every 2-3 weeks , sometimes more often. and use something called MTG mane and tail conditioner. (Says it will grow hair and thicken it) Stinks terribly and is greasy. But I put it on the spots where the hair loss was and on thin on spot on tail. It last a while, I put it weekly or biweekly. Have not had reoccurance of hair loss in months now. It says is will take care of fungus, rain rot etc. I'd used other fungus products and expensive ph stuff from the vet. But  this is 15.00$ for 32 oz. and it has lasted for 4 months. I didn't  bath or use it onl older mare we have(sorry neglected her a bit) she had some reoccurence, and it had only happened to her 2x. S
So I will continue to use this this fall and winter , if we get to March it will be a year with no hair loss and the vets had thrown up their hands.
This lady had a TW and said she had the same problem and no vet could solve it, and it was a show horse, she uses it and just washes it out good when she shows. Only thing that has worked for her. She puts it on weekly.
Ps. it stinks land stays on your hands, may want to use gloves, and it did make me change reins, got them greasy.    Laurie and Rascal
