There was an excellent test of
soundness and toughness held last summer, it was called XP2001. The horse
that went the longest was 14 hands carrying over 200 lbs., the next longest was
13.2 or so carrying about 190 lbs. At the start there were 198 horses and
many well known, fast, tall horses. I believe it is harder for 14 hand horses to
be fast in one day 50 or 100 mile rides. But when the ride became long the
taller horses couldn't stay as sound. I believe this 8 week test's results could
be extrapolated into seasons and long time soundness. Joe's points are
