[RC] Advise for beginner with QH - Ridecamp Guest

    Sandy unchienne@xxxxxxx
I have a 15 year old 15 hh QH that I recently purchased. She is not the "bulldog" type that most QH's are associated with. I've actually been asked by many people if she was an arab cross. If she wasn't registered, I'd almost believe that she was: slightly dishy head, short backed, good bone, and a spunky attitude. She's been out in pasture for a couple of years before I bought her and she is still out of shape, but one thing she isn't lacking is heart. She's got a high stepping, ground covering gait, and even when worked at an extended canter and trot session her breathing/pulse is always quick to come down. I don't harbor any fantasies about 100 or even 50 mile rides, but there is a local charity hosted ride in our town every October. I'd like to get my girl and myself conditioned enough to attempt the 25 mile LD next year. The terrain is wooded but flat so I believe that a year may be enough to at least try to finish. The only problem is that I'm at a complete loss as to how to condition/what tack I need/ect... Most of the information out on the net is geared towards more advanced riders. Does anyone know of a good website or book for absolute beginners to the sport?

Advise on tack and equipment would be appreciated too. Right now I have a Tucker Equitation Endurance saddle, not b/c I wanted to get into the sport but b/c it is what fit best for my horse, is it comfortable/rugged enough to actually compete in?
