Re: [RC] [RC] Sheath? What sheath? - susan willis

I have only cleaned my gelding twice in 8 years, and I didn't even do the 'up to my elbow' routine - I just hosed it out with warm water. And only because someone made me feel real guilty for never having done it.....so far as I can tell, my gelding at age 11 is healthy and content and has no problems with me avoiding his most private area!!

BUT for the most part, my gelding has been kept out in pasture 24/7 and I understand that this sheath cleaning is more of an issue for stalled horses who don't get enough exercise??? Dunno, as I only have the experience of a handful of horses. My previous gelding I had for 7 years and he was never cleaned, either. Can't say that I ever noticed his 'part' looking flaky or scaly or gross as some people have mentioned. And yes, I do look at it occasionally when it makes the odd appearance. For the most part my geldings are shy in that area.
