Re: [RC] Missing shoe - Truman Prevatt

If you know how to remove a shoe or know someone that does that can remove it for you, I sure remove it. Might also want to a rasp and rasp off any corners so the hoof doesn't tear any. Eventers weight about a pound a piece and the leg is a long lever - not to mention the one foot will be about 3/8s of an farther off the ground than the other. I guess if I were going 20 miles I'd also remove the shoe and put easy boots on the back to miniize the chance of breaking out the hoof wall from the old nail holes.

    Maggie,

Money is not the issue here. I found a rear shoe missing on Saturday of
Labor Day Weekend, and have a ride with friends in another part of the state
scheduled for Monday of Labor Day Weekend.

If it had been a front shoe lost,. I would just have cancelled my plans and
left a message for my farrier. Based on past experience, he would come out
on Tuesday or Wednesday to replace the lost shoe. No way would I expect him
to come on a holiday weekend (unless I was heading out for a competition, in
which case I would call and beg and try to bribe LOL). This farrier comes
to the (boarding) farm every week, and I'll have the shoe(s) replaced on
    Friday. We're scheduled for a re-set a week later.

I can't help but think that the difference between his left and right hind
feet could cause stress and strain to his hind end on what is for us a long
ride. I do not have the skill or tools to remove the shoe, but I can get
    help with that.
