One thing that WILL get fish in a water trough is a raccoon.  We've had that happen.

Now, wouldn't the fish in the trough draw the birds?

I have not had that problem.  Although, my Jake horse climbs completely into the big trough and splashes around.  He stomped 3 Koi to death.  Poor things never expected a horse to get them.  I just slid the trough under the fence enough so that the horses can't get in it......Have not lost fish to birds though.....mb
