[RC] ridge and crack on hind hoof - Lysane Cree

    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has seen the following: I just noticed a small horizontal crack about midway down the left hind hoof of a mare I am currently riding. I noticed at the same time that she has a ridge on the front part of that same hoof about a 1/2 inch from the coronet. Would you have an idea what could have caused either of these? I am pretty sure that the crack is new, but that the ridge must have been there for awhile. This horse is ridden mostly barefoot, although she did have shoes on the front hooves only about a month ago. Her feet behind have that "barefoot" look - worn down but not overly short. Her conformation behind is quite good although she toes out slightly and her pasterns might be a tad long. She is a gaited horse though and I think they tend to have pasterns that are a little longer than other breeds (correct me if I'm wrong). I was going to ride today and it seemed that she was a little off on that same (left) hind leg. It was barely there but I didn't want to do anything that might make it worse, so I did not ride. She is in a pasture 24/7. She only eats the grass in the field and since alot of that is gone because of lack of rain, she gets grass hay.  Any ideas on these hoof "marks"??

    Lysane
