    He might start to eat once he has more experience.  But, if not, I think
    you're okay traveling a reasonable distance to rides without constant
    roughage consumption.  If he's well tanked up with feed before you leave,
    and starts to eat right away as soon as you arrive at camp, I should think
    you'd be fine.  If you could arrange your schedule to arrive a few hours
    earlier than usual at base camp, giving him more time to nosh, that would be
    great.
