Oh Colleen, this is interesting.
I had a similar thing happen last fall. I vaccinated 2 horses, and only one developed the symptoms you describe. To the best of my knowledge (we had recently purchased him from Idaho), it was the first time this horse had received the vaccine. I'm not sure about the other, but he's 23 years old and lived here his whole life so I assume he'd been vaccincated before then. It was Fort Dodge, and was administered by my vet.
When I had the vet out and he determined that it was the rabies that caused the reaction, he told me it was the first time he had ever seen a horse react to the rabies vaccine. The other two horses received the same vaccine with no problem.
Now I question whether to risk a second vaccine with this particular horse, given the way the immune system responds more strongly to the second exposure. I will definitely continue to vaccinate all other horses (and cats and dogs) for rabies as there is enough of it here in the CA foothills to require that. I am trying to find another manufacturer, but at this point all I have found is Ft. Dodge.
Please let me know if you find an alternative.
