    Liz,
I've been working this mare since April. She had 3 weeks off in July when I fractured my ankle. I read somewhere (maybe it was here, I've read so much I can't remember) that you should be training the amount of miles your competition is going to be every week. Figuring an LD was going to be my first ride, I've been trying to get 25-30 miles a week. Mixed trail with a little ring work (this mare hates doing circles). I ride about 4 times a week, some short rides (5-6 miles) and a long ride on the weekend. Unfortunately my terrian choices are limited to roadside, a few 2 tracks and circling our property which is all flat. I have 2 small hills in my regiment, but they're really not much. My hubby, bless his heart, worked up the field next to the house so I have some deeper sand to work in.

I also have some feeding issues. I've seen so much about suppliments, electrolytes, etc. but I hesitate to use any. Believe it or not, I'm not giving grain or hay right now to this mare. She is strictly on pasture only, as she gains weight if I suppliment with even a few flakes of hay a day. Is this bad? I know when I start to compete I'll need to have something for her at vet stops, but what? Just hay, beet mash, a small portion of grain with electro's mixed in?

Some of my questions seem "stupid" to me, like I should KNOW this! At the ride we went to a few months ago, I saw some folks just throwing a few flakes of hay to their horse at the vet stops, however they may have given them something I missed. I also saw a few people giving applesauce to their horses in what looked like a wormer tube, but I don't know what they had mixed in with it. I know each horse has different needs, we have 10 and they all have different feeding schedules.

Any suggestions for this newbie would be appreciated.

    TIA

You don't describe your horse's training history, so it is hard to make general recommendations about what distance to start with. Your pace is fine, but how long you have been doing LSD work with her, and what kind of distance you are covering is important information to have before someone makes recommendations. It will also depend on terrain - you may train on one type of terrain, but have an upcoming ride on a different type of terrain. All this would factor in to a decision.
