[RC] Swimming with horses - Rides 2 Far

    > I remember an old TWH mare we had when I was a kid loved the water.

One of my best friends had a TWH *and* a lake. We'd take Surprise out in
it bareback, then the first thing he'd do is crap. Yes Virginia, it does
float...there's also no current in a lake to carry it away. Made
splashing mandatory but he did stand still well and make a good diving
    board.

She did tell me the reason she really *swim* him any more was that one
time they were out in the lake and somehow his feet seemed to get tangled
in something and he started struggling and ended up on his back and
almost drowned. He stayed no farther out than his chest from then on.

My big Appaloosa would go out until he was floating, swim a stroke, but
then he'd sort of panic and "reach" for the bottem with his hind legs.
When they contacted he would LEAP. He traveled more like a speed boat.
The main thing I remember about swimming with horses is that you don't
ride them. The second your legs go under you float up and just sort of
    float over them hanging on.

I thought my daughters would never get to experience such
recklessness...but then I fell asleep right after the Million Pines 50
and by the time I woke up that evening they'd been out in Wes's lake on
Weebie's grandaughter's horse and had all sorts of fun. >g<
