Re: [RC] [RC] Rules - Nancy Mitts

The trouble is 95% (at least) of the membership just wants to ride & not get involved in "the politics". Try seriously discussing issues at an actual ridecamp--most of the people will walk off, and grumble about politics spoiling their ride. They just wanna have fun. But SOMEBODY has to do the nitty gritty work of keeping an organization running. Is it any surprise that the people willing to work at it might also have an extra interest in it's success? It might be financial, a power trip, or just promoting the segment of the sport they like best (multi-day, FEI, one day 100's, whatever). The membership definately needs to keep their eyes open for abuses, ask questions and vote their conscience. Keep in mind, though, that SOMEONE has to do the work, and the people doing it are going to have the greatest say in how it gets done!

The bottom line is if there is a conflict of interest the BOD has, as John Parke mentioned in the last EN, an obligation by cooperate law to deal with it. This is also clearly pointed out in the new bylaws. Does a sanctioning director who runs a lot of rides present a conflict of interest - probably. This is a tricky issue and one I feel one the BOD needs to wrestle with in the future. Any time a decision is made based on self interest we all lose.
