I've got a mare with quite high withers that I've
ridden ALL over bareback. :)  I do seem to recall
adding extra pads if we were going to be out long
enough (she's 20 now and doesn't get much riding).

This IS true.  But it can be overcome. ;)  And I,
personally, still love riding bareback.  I just don't
do at as often anymore.
