Pads can help with rocky trails and should not affect traction though there are a few horses who once in a while will act as if they can't "feel" the ground but will become accustomed to them.  We do not use silicone as packing and only use and recommend Equi Pak.  It does not squish out like silicone as it sets in about 30 seconds.  It fills all the nooks and crannies and we have NEVER had a case of thrush or anything nasty under the pads, even on a horse who was stalled continually (special case of horse with a broken coffin bone).
