Re: re [RC] Runaways - DAldr94141

My first runaway, and last, was about 5 yrs. ago the day before my first CTR. I took someone elses arab. We got to camp, got the portable corral set up and some friends suggested I take him for a short ride to calm him down. I got on and he was antsy. We started down the trail with friends watching. The beginning was a long open trail about 800' long with a killer hill at the end and about 50' wide.
We got to the bottom of the hill just ready to go up when I heard some people calling their barking dogs. Well, the dogs came over the top of the hill, locked eyes with the horse and the horse did a turn and ran! I was hanging over and unfortunately pulled myself up. He was galloping full speed with 2 whippets under him. I tried pulling him in a circle (HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Like THAT was easy!) There was NO WAY! He wouldn't budge. So I looked down, said OH SHOOT and let go. Did a couple of back rolls that totally made me dizzy. The horse ran back into camp totally crazed. Someone caught him. I bailed because I didn't want him to fall and kill me or run into someone and kill that person. I broke my ankle and had some pins put in.
This was in a Nat'l Park. The people were fined and I got a very decent settlement.
Had the pins pulled the next year because they were sticking out after the swelling finally went down. It'll never be the same. So now I'm very careful about falling off. I don't!!
