There is a shot you can give them to calm their hormones....you might want
to check with the vet for it.  It keeps from going into heat.  So if you are
going to an event, you could give it to her before the event.  

I'll be curious to know if indeed they do spayed mares....never heard of it,
but then again I only had geldings until recently, now I have a mare....and
boy do I know what you mean about mares going into heat.  My mare gets fire
in her eyes....she gets pretty scary looking around that time.

Does anyone have any experience with having mares spayed?  We just bought a
9 yr. old mare that has never conceived and is just plain nasty when in
heat.  Our vet is talking to us about having her spayed.  Said that would
make her act more like a gelding.

Also, we are planning to have her feet xrayed to see if she would have any
problem doing endurance.  Which would be the more important view to have
taken - a shot for possible side bone or for navicular?  Evidently it
requires a different view to be taken.  If necessary, we'll of course have
all views taken.
