[RC] leasing - Barb Reid
> Anyone have any good/bad leasing experiences?
I'm a few days behind in my posting but I couldn't pass
this one up. I also have a mare that was spending most of
her life just loafing in the field and she was too nice for
that. I had leased her out twice to people who wanted to
'learn to ride' and she was too much for them. Nothing
dangerous but just wouldn't respond to their efforts to
guide her. So when one of the local 'ridecampers' posted,
asking about horses for lease, I offered her again. What a
wonderful match this has turned out to be.
The rider, Beth, had endurance experience and has been so
easy to work with. She started the mare out slow and easy
with lots of LSD last fall and some dressage lessons. This
spring/summer she did 3 slow 50's (tailend award type).
Then last weekend we rode Klickitat together...a 25 because
that's all my horse was ready for...and she took BC with my
mare. We were both so proud.
I think you need to be careful who you lease to and keep a
close eye on what's going on with your horse, but here's
proof that it can be a GREAT experience. BTW, I've always
kept the mare at my place and the rider comes to us, which
means that I've got control of feeding, shoeing, worming,
etc, all the basics.
