Re: [RC] Pacers at Tevis - Howard Bramhall

Aren't we getting carried away here with this "pacer" thread?  You cannot prevent riders from going out on the trail who aren't part of the endurance event, unless you intend on patrolling the trails with Homeland Security.  I do believe that the term Pacer means a rider intentionally being there to urge a "buddy" along the trail.  If you accidentally run into non endurance horseback riders along the trail who travel with you during the endurance event, that's just the way it is.  Some rides have bicyclists, 4 wheelers, and redneck hunters in pick-up trucks flying the Confederate flag sharing that endurance trail during ride day.  Most of these things scare the crap out of my horses (especially the rednecks) and I wouldn't consider them an advantage at all.

But, if we do meet someone just trotting out along the trail, during an endurance ride, that's called coincidence.  I don't think there's much you can do about it.  This sort of thing happens more than you might think.

There was this one Florida ride where a gal, who got pulled at the pre-ride vet check, just kept going up and down this one stretch of trail on her horse on ride day.  By golly, she had camped out here intending to ride and she was going to ride, although she did it all within a mile or two of the Base Camp area.  Well, unbeknownst to her, here comes my gal, Val, along with another rider I knew, both racing for the first place finish.  Well, the gal who got pulled just happened to be riding the same stretch of finish line (she was preparing for her future, I guess) and didn't see Val and the other gal coming up from behind her.  The Rookie's horse caused Val's horse to spook, Val got thrown off, and the other rider passed Val and won the race.

Now, I'm not going to tell you when this was, where it was, or even if any of it is true.  But, down here, nobody said nothing, the other gal won the race, and I never heard anyone complain about any of it.  Stuff happens, it's called life; deal with it.  Course, we didn't have any California endurance riders in this one.  That's probably why nobody complained.  haha.

In response to the anonymous post on pacers at Tevis, the following is from
a member of the WSTF board of governors about her and another "bog's"
    observations at the finish line:

Kathy Thompson and myself were at the overlook when the first horse came
in.  About 1/2 hour later a pair of riders came in riding two grays, they
said they were not in the ride.  Also spoke to Mia Dardie and she said she
saw Potato at Robie and he was by himself, no other riders in sight.
