[RC] re: Lame from nail - Brenda L. Kossowan
Sadly, I have had some experience with puncture wounds. Penicillin will
treat the infection, but you must also treat the hoof, and ensure that
the wound does not seal over on the surface and trap the infection
inside. Initially, soak the hoof in hot water with a bit of bleach and a
good measure of Epsom salts. Follow that with daily soakings in hot
water and Epsom salts - about as hot has you can manage with your hand.
You can use a bucket, or make a boot out of a piece of inner tubing, cut
to about two feet long. Stuff the horse's foot halfway into the tube,
then turn the remainder up in front so you can pour the water into the
end, then hold it al together with duct tape. I've treated two horses
this way and both came to love the foot bath, probably because it gave
relief from their pain and because they got a little something to chew
on while they were being soaked. It wouldn't hurt to keep the foot
covered with something, a medicine boot or an easy boot, to keep the
wound relatively clean. Neither of my horses showed any trouble after
about six weeks of treatment.
