[RC] Lame from nail - TBlue1

Hoping someone could help me with what is normal for an injury
of a nail in a hoof.
The nail was in the hoof about 24 hours. Pulled it out and it was about 1 1/4
    inches
and new and clean. Put horse on penicillin 48 hours later. Treated for five
    days.
Skipped 48 hours and now the vet has him back on penicilling for another five
    days.
My question is what's normal? Some days he walks normal with just a bit of
toe dragging. Other days he drops his hip and limps like crazy.
He eats, drinks, canters around the pasture. I did find out I shouldn't have
    pulled the
nail our but it was my 'first time'... now I know!
Have checked the hoof with a hoof tester and don't think there's an abcess.
How long will a horse limp around from something like this? Should I insist
    my vet
do more? She doesn't seem to think it's that big of a deal. What should I
    expect?
I know there are no 'for sures' , but would like to now if I should do more.
Thanks for any input... you can e-mail me privately if you wish.
    Thanks again!!!
    Tracy and Arbus
