I have been reading about how Hal Hall should be on front page because he is "so respected and a great person" I wonder how he became that when he was caught cheating on Tevis a few years ago.  Cut trail.  Yes, this is a documented fact, not something made up.  Also one year his wife "who didn't know anything about horses" happened to put "purple" medicine or some such unproved medicine on his horse during ride and "conveniently" lost the bottle when vets wanted to see it. This too is a documented fact.
Yes, I can see where this type of behavior would make any rider well respected.
In my opinion I think the vets and Tevis, or any ride management should forget the "big names" and treat everyone fairly.  If horse is lame, pull it not matter what the rider's name is.  We all pay the same entry fee so we all should have equal rights.

As far as Potato charging through to start, this sounds very "unsportman like and dangerous" to other riders and horses.  I think it was said if anyone saw this type of conduct, rider would be pulled. I think if anyone reads any ride entry they all state that.  Another well known name wins again!

Go ahead and get on my case, but someone has to say this stuff.  This "big name" business happens at all rides.  I have been there and seen it in my 15 years of endurance riding.

My husband was splattered all over the front page of the sports section in
the Auburn paper in 98...the title being
"PLACER HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE COMES BACK AFTER 20 YEARS TO RIDE THE TEVIS".
(Bruce's family is from Auburn) The article was published BEFORE the Tevis,
and it was quite a monkey to put on his back! Luckily, he finished :)
My heartiest congrats to all of you that tried...it is THE endurance ride!
Maybe there are just two types of endurance riders: those that have the
buckle and those that want one!
