[RC] Haggin Cup vs. BC Judging; Tevis Rules - Joan Dowis

Lisa, the Tevis was the first endurance ride as we know them. Tevis was run
for many years before AERC was created by Tevis riders and other riders from
the greater Auburn area. When the Ride accepted AERC sanctioning, I believe
in the early 90s, it was done under the condition that the Tevis use its own
rules where they differed from AERC. Haggin Cup judging has been conducted
under its own rules which have remained consistent since the beginning of
    Tevis.

The reason Tevis accepted sanctioning was because riders wanted credit for
their 100 miles of the toughest endurance ride anywhere. Tevis was
"grandfathered" in. That's why you will find differences between AERC and
    Tevis rules.
