    Your Vet's correct.
    Sidebone is caused from a hoof imbalance.
    If it wasn't poor trimming (or no trimming) or poor shoeing, then he may
    have a conformational fault, somewhere up the leg from the hoof, 
    which is causing the imbalance.
    Sidebone is calcification of the lateral cartilages.. so if you catch it in time, fins and correct the imbalance, he has a chance.
