Remembering, however, that Howard measures endurance rides in BPM  "Beers
Per Mile" and thus uses a different yardstick in calculating "overall ride
cost"...   :-)

When Howard makes a comment about the savings he is making by
keeping his horse's barefoot and trimming them himself, and how
this might make it so he can afford to go to more endurance rides
in far away places (like the XP), he is not stating that he cannot AFFORD to
pay a shoer, but only that he if he doesn't have to pay a shoer he can spend
his money on other more fun things.
