[RC] Riding in the Dark - Rides 2 Far

Go get a 6" flourescent "closet light" from Lowes. I think it used 4 AA
batteries. I just duct tape it crosswise on the breastcollar (at the V)
It'll light up a large pool of light in front of the horse and allows you
to watch for footing without wobbling and confusing the horse. No shadows
either. Take a flashlight for searching for markers in trees if
necessary, but keep it turned off most of the time. It's also good to
wave when a car's coming. Don't shine it at them, hold it over your head
and shine it down on yourself!

If you know the trail you might prefer to turn the flourescent light off
when you're out on a road or somewhere that you're confident there's no
culverts & such (enjoy the true night ride), but I love the flourescent
if you plan to keep trotting. Another plus, it lets you see grass if you
want to let them get a bite. That was a surprise for me when I did my
first 100, couldn't see food to let them have it. I love glowsticks for
markers, but don't think they help on the horse except to let others see
you. *another* advantage of the flourescent over glowsticks...if your
competition's gaining on you, you can turn it off and they won't know
you're there.(another good reason to train your horse to keep his feet on
the grass...no clip clopping on pavement) >g<

Angie (shhhh be vewy vewy quiet!)

P.S. Whenever we drop down and decide to walk the last few miles in the
dark, I'm suddenly STARVING. You'll be very popular if you're the one
who breaks out the cheese & crackers in a group.
