    [RC] Ponying - Doris Kulp

I have done quite a bit of ponying in the past two years and this is what I've had luck with. I use a Pat Parelli rope halter as it puts pressure on the poll which makes them come along nicely, but the pressure is not damaging like a regular halter can sometimes be. I also use the Parelli 12 foot long lead rope. The weight is just right so when, and I say when and not if, it gets caught under the tail of the horse you are riding, it will very easily drop out (if you can get the horse you're riding to unclamp the tail ever so slightly). The rope seems long, but oftentimes I use it all. It works great fon single track trails and when the ponied horse is close, I just lay the extra over the neck of the horse I'm riding. The length helps a lot when your ponied horse decides to change sides-it gives you time to switch and not get wrapped up.

    Good luck.
