    Death rate is low (less than 5%, AIR), but Tammy is right that those who die from it usually do so because the abcesses internalized.

    This is not always true.  Sandy, in your area about 4 years ago, three horses died from this.  I had one yearling that I tried to rescue from Moorpark, CA with it.  We lost her, it had lost all external signs and went internal.  My neighbor had a full sister to Rett Butler, Tarrah & Ima Liberated Lady, 5 year old, in perfect health same thing he lost her.  Another horse on a near by ranch died with the same thing in the same time period, in Newbury Park, CA.
