[RC] Roman Cavalry - Ridecamp Guest

    Edward R. Fahy, MD peripatetics@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hi, all! I teach latin to seven grade honors students in my spare time, and each year, the first session is devoted to a discussion of the milieu -- what it was like to live about the time of Julius Caesar.

Part of the discussion is about transportation, and therein lies my question:

How far could a person ride in one day without damaging the horse? (assuming reasonable roads, which the Romans had, as well as good weather).

I have tried asking the question among those of my friends who are equestrien(ne)s, and I'm getting answers all over the map. If any of you have info, I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks!
