Re: [RC] Rice Bran questions again? - Truman Prevatt

Nutrina has out a new supplement call Empower (if I remember correctly) based on rice brand and oil (corn and flax seed) that is about 22% fat. It doesn't have the problems of stright rice brand of being unbalanced in Ca/P ratio (as Natural Glo is this is why you feed the minerals) nor the problem of contains a lot of Ca to offset the natural imbalance as some of the others do. You might want to check that out. It's about the same price as rice brand.

    Hello all,

I'm looking to supplement stabilized rice bran for a very underweight horse, and have been reading the archives and the company literature for the different brands.  I have a few questions if anyone can answer them.

    1)  Some literature says not to feed corn oil in conjunction with the rice bran, does anyone know why?  I'm feeding about 1 cup oil per day now.

    2)  The Moorman's Natural Glo (which is readily available and a good price) says it should be fed in conjunction with their minerals.  Is this necessary or just a sales ploy?

    3)  Would you feed a rice bran supplement or go with one of the new formulated foods containing rice bran with the diet I'm feeding listed below?

This mare is on 1lb. dry weight beet pulp, 1/2 cup corn oil, biotin, brewers yeast, and top dressing of Strategy, twice a day.  She gets free feed Bermuda grass hay. Don't want to add more Strategy until she starts working harder, don't want to work her harder until she puts some weight on.

She's a new horse, and I'll probably have her scoped (especially after all this talk) to see if she has ulcers if she doesn't start putting weight on soon.  Will be checking out the archives on that topic again.

Thanks for all the help, I'm hoping she's just a hard keeper, never had trouble putting weight on a horse before though with the diet listed above.
