[RC] Newbies - kathy . mayeda

As a slightly "older" newbie, I have been trailering
newbie friends to rides so that they could experience
their first endurance rides. Sure, I give them advice
about electrolytes, pacing and stuff mostly because I
remember that I didn't know this stuff when I first
started. But sometimes I cringe when they call me their
    mentor!

There are a few higher mileage people at my barn.
Sometimes they are not as free with advice. It's not
that they are acting snotty or anything - it's just that
they might be taking for granted that I automatically
know stuff, or maybe they just don't like telling other
people how to ride their ride. Probably more of the
latter. But they are good for me to tag along with them
when I get the chance, because they teach me a lot about
pacing. I take that back - they do offer advice - I
just don't know that I'm receiving it when they do.

I get a thrill out of watching someone go thru and
experience the fun of endurance for the first time. I
know that soon these riders will surpass me as endurance
riders but that's okay. One is planning to ride Tevis
this year, and the other is destined to Top 10 with a
very fit horse soon even though she won't acknowledge it
    herself!
