When Jim stated that he didn't see anything wrong with his horse, during the pre ride trot out, where his horse almost got pulled, I do think Jim might have a reason to be concerned, especially if they did pull Sunny.

As someone who watched most of the vetting, especially saw Jim's horse vet in.  After watching Sunny trot out, and was surprised that he was allowed to start.  I even asked Joan how you got to start, you know the answer to that.  The vets made several people recheck, those that were "off" some they had no problem letting them start.  One I trotted for the rider because he injured himself in the first trot out, and they advised him not to start as the horse was sensitive on a suspensory.  There is nothing on that trail that is going to improve soundness.
The OD always has their re check squad, and has (at least every year I have gone) had several they haven't let start, or the owner's were smart enough not to want to.  One year, a 100 miler talked them into letting him start stated that the horse had to warm out of his lameness, grudgingly they allowed him to start, and he finished the 100.  Don't think they found a reason for the lameness, was probably arthritic. But most that talk them into it, just have a joyful long wait for a trailer ride back home.
