RE: [RC] Probiotics - Snodgrass, Bonnie

I've had more than one vet tell me that probiotics are a waste of money as
they can't possibly make it past the stomach acid. Recently had a horse on
an extended course of antibiotics after surgery which combined left her with
very loose manure. Went ahead and put her on probiotics anyway.

Has any real research been done on this subject?

I have seen a friends horse that was treated for a very long time with
antibiotics for Lyme disease develope projectile diarhea. He responded to
ABC Plus Pro Bi. Everytime he was taken off it he returned to the diarhea.
He was also tested positive for Salmonella but I think that is debateable
also. Anyway, it was his vet who suggested the ABC Plus product.

I like Fastrack because of the number of different species included, not
alot of fluff filler and a decent price. If you're feeding any additional
supplements, then I like using the Grand Meadows line, as they include a
particular yeast culture I'm particularly fond of (Yea-Sacc), especially for
young horses. Both are available through the catalogs or in most feed
stores. The Yea-Sacc culture can sometimes be found in feed stores that
cater to cattle or swine, and I leap on it when I find it.
