[RC] Whorls - Stephanie_D_Adair
Last night my farrier came out and slapped some shoes on my gelding for
upcoming ride this weekend. He started talking about whorls, very
interesting! Do any of ya'll have any experience with this?
He asked how my gelding and I did on our first ride together (my gelding is
an experienced endurance horse), I said pretty good, but horse still has
some issues. Farrier worked for a while, then looked at horses neck, and
said "I bet he's got quite a few issues". Well, yeah, but where's he come
off? :-) I just said, "We're doing the best we can together, but most
times I just feel he's "not getting it", I really never know what to expect
from him. I wish he had just some of the brains and demeanor as our 2 year
old gelding over there". I REALLY love that 2 year old, he's a sweetheart.
And off we went from there...............
Farrier went over some, but what I remember is the whorls on the neck. He
said "optimum" is a whorl within 4 inches of the ear and preferably
parallel. So he showed me. My gelding's left whorl is about 12 inches
down his neck from his ear, and the right one another 6 inches past that!
Almost to his withers. If I remember correctly, farrier said distance from
ear was intelligence and/or attitude and the further apart they were on
each side was retention. So I ran over and brought the colt out. Whorls
were EXACTLY 4" behind his ear and matching on each side. Farrier told me
to make sure and keep that nice colt, he should be very intelligent, kind,
and remember each training session from one day to the next.
What do ya'll think?
