Breeding horses is a risky business, there are several hundred things which can
go wrong killing either the mare or fetus/foal, or both. If you consider all
the possible risks involved, most people would never breed... its all a matter
of risk management. Palpation and US allow management of several things which
put the mare at high risk, including Twinning. As an aside, bovine vets tend to
rougher [which increases your chance of perforation] with palpating/US because
cows have a stronger rectal wall.
