I had my trailer come off the hitch just last year - I was cheerfully pulling my 'thank god it was empty' trailer to the trailer repair guy to have lights added when I went over an expansion joint on a freeway overpass - the emergency brake worked - we were stuck. Trailer had more work that originally planned. It turns out that the ball was slightly undersized and it was possible to see the wear in it I assume from sand scrubbing. Whole thing was only 2 years old...
