    That I completely agree with!

My up-and-comer's (4yo and 3yo) have great walks. My 4yo consistently gets 8's on his free walk in tests, even when he is horrible on the rest of the test. Head goes down and forward and he really looks like he has someplace to go and only allowed so many steps to get there. Huge overreach for a 14.2 hand horse! Even when he is stiff coming from stable, or it's very cold out, he has significant overreach and really troops along. And once warmed up from stable, or out in pasture, the swing in his walk is great!

Same with my 3yo. Great walk, 2-3 hoof prints of overreach. She actually has a good suspended trot, but seems lately to prefer the canter... Nice clear true 3 beats. Not "up" enough for dressage, but plenty forward in reach. She's not under saddle, so no work started yet on "improving" her gaits.

I don't hold out any hope of getting my 12yo to "develop" a good walk <g>.

My neighbor who rides Grand Prix level dressage as said many times, to
look for a horse with a good walk and a good canter and forget about the
trot. A good trot can be taught, a good walk and good canter has to be
    there.

Hmm.. My training numbers must be *way* off then... a 15mph canter?
That would be closer to hand gallop for us...

    I want a nice steady 8mph trot and a 12mph canter... And I would
absolutely love to get an actual honest clockable 4mph walk...
Without having to use *my* legs to keep it up. Sadly my horse doesn't
have this walk on his own, more like 2.5 to 3mph...
