RE: [RC] [RC] Green Horses - dixie midnight

Let me make my position extraordinarily clear.

I have ridden for many many years, each year to be an improvement over the last in horsemanship and rider ability. I've never known a bad horse.

I put forth an idea based on some of that experience. If you can get some good out of it, do so. If not, don't waste your time talking to me about it, I've seen you in a thousand places on a thousand horses, and you still haven't learned anything, regardless of your discipline..

That's just what these old eyes have seen. If you've seen something different...that's for your eyes.

I won't be riding your endurance rides. It's not my cup o' tea. I've ridden one too many fences, and pushed one too many cows to go do what you do for fun. Does that mean I can't? Nope. It means I won't. My time left to me is spent on a few cows, bringing up a few horses, maybe finishing nine or ten more before I die, and helping whomever asks me with the Horse in their heart.

But I'll help whoever wants to learn a bit the best I can. And it won't cost you a dime. It's free. Just e-mail me with your questions, and we'll see what we can do. And no, there ain't no strings attached. All we need is your sincerity, and committment to being a better rider. It's called Passing It On.

It's all common-sense stuff, been around for five thousand years...if ya know where to look. It's hard, time-comsuming, and not like anything you've done before. But you'll have a much different view of your horses, and they will certainly have a different view of you.

Please do not bother sending me e-mail to vent your spleen or explain your position of disagreement. I won't even read it, much less respond.

So there you go. It's yours if you want it. It's for your horses.

    Tracey,

Please don't think that all of us are like Howard at endurance events. I've
been to 8 different rides in 3 different regions and have yet to meet an
idiot who placed himself/herself and other in danger with their horse. 99%
of us are there to enjoy the trail, our horses and each other while exerting
our skills to accomplish a personal goal and not at the expense of others
around us. Everyone I've come across bends over backwards to help out
newbies and start them out right for this sport.

DON'T let Howard's ravings spoil this great sport for you and your equine
partner. Ask around where a good "first ride" is in your area and then train
    to achieve that goal.

Hang in there! It really is a great sport:)

Because, that's the damn beauty of the sport! You don't get it because you
haven't done it. For some of us, this is what makes the whole thing so darn
exciting, invigorating, and enjoyable, if not sometimes a little scary.
Anybody can play at our game. Anybody, including you, Karl. Anytime you
want. Just show up with your horse and get thru that pre ride vet check,
and you're in. We don't want no stinking rules, we don't want no levels of
ability set on us or our horses, we just want the clipboard lady to say,
    "Giddy-up and GO!"

And *this*, Howard, is why I'm so reluctant to participate in "your" sport.
I've spent a lot of hours at home, making sure that my horse is safe to be
around, that he listens to me, doesn't kick out at other horses and riders,
will only travel at the gait which I dictate, will stand quietly whilst a
hundred other horses are behaving badly (and yes, Howard, I do know what
that's like - ever been out Hunting?), and, basically does not impose a
    danger to himself or others.

And now, just as I think "yes, I'm ready to do my first distance ride", I
read a post like this. And you know what? It *doesn't* make me want to do
endurance. It *doesn't* excite me. It scares me and it makes me angry.

Because this game is dangerous enough as it is, without willingly subjecting
myself to the palookas out there on their ill-trained mounts.

It *is* possible to have a controlled start, without allowing it to become
dangerous. How do you do that? I could tell you (because it's done in
other sports), but I get the feeling you're not interested, because I'm not
"qualified" to tell you, having never done a distance ride.
