Re: RC: Re: gelding older stallions

A very good friend of mine had a wonderful Quarter
horse stallion named "Joe Mckenna".He was well
trained, was shown successfully and bred a full book
of mares every year. When her daughter wanted to show
in the youth division (18 and under can't show
stallions), Gail had Joe cut. He was 14 at the time.
Everyone thought Gail had lost it (the things we do
for our kids!)and that Joe would never be a suitable
youth mount. Well.. he turned out to be a youth horse
deluxe. Joe was never real "studdy" as a stallion so I
wondered if that had alot to do with the great
transition from stallion to gelding. He was also very
well mannered and could be ridden by her daughter
anywhere when he was still a stud. So I do know that
gelding an older stallion can be successfully done. I
would venture alot depends on the stallion.
